Before And After

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover from skin cancer surgery?

Most surgical wounds will heal within 1-3 weeks. For big surgeries or areas with not enough skin to close the wound, a skin graft may be necessary to properly close the wound.

Surgeons typically retrieve this from a nearby inconspicuous location and will discuss it with you before the surgery. The donor site will heal in the same time frame.

Will I be under general or local anaesthetic for the surgery?

We perform all our surgeries under local anaesthetic. The doctor will administer this via a small number of injections around the site to effectively numb the area. You will remain awake throughout the procedure. For patients who suffer from needle phobia, your doctor can prescribe medication to alleviate stress prior to surgery.

How deep do they cut to remove skin cancer?

The removal will include the lesion and some nearby tissue. This is to make sure there is a clear margin separation from the healthy tissue around it. 3-5mm is the standard measurement of clear margin for most skin cancers.

Will I need any stitches?

All skin surgeries require stitches to close the wound. The surgeon will place dissolvable stitches internally and/or externally. At your one-week follow-up, the doctor will take out any stitches that didn't dissolve after your surgery. If you need a skin graft during your procedure, you may have stitches for an additional week.

How painful is skin cancer removal?

You will feel only a little discomfort from the injections because of the local anaesthetic. You shouldn't feel any pain during the procedure. A few hours after surgery the anaesthetic effect will begin to wear off. You might feel some pain for the first few days, but you can manage it with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How will I know if all the cancer is removed?

The surgeon will send the tissue removed during your surgery to pathology for analysis. A report will detail if clear margins were achieved during your procedure, specifying if any further surgery will be required. We will discuss these results with you at your aftercare appointment 7-10 days following your procedure.

The nurse will apply your dressing on the day of your procedure. This dressing is to remain in place and dry for the first 3 days.

You can then change the dressings at home and clean the wound with antiseptic. You should change this secondary dressing every 2 days until your aftercare appointment. If the dressings become blood-soaked or wet you will change the dressing again as required.

We will place sports tapes on the wound after 1 week. This is waterproof and you can remove it after one week.
